Located a 3-minute walk from Higashi Hongan-ji Temple and a 5-minute walk to Shosei-en Garden, the family-run Wajimaya Ryokan offers basic Japanese-style rooms with an LCD TV, air conditioning and shared bathrooms.

Traditional futon bedding on a tatami (woven-straw) floor is provided for each guest at Ryokan Wajimaya. Toilets are shared, and Yukata robes are included. The simple furnishings include a low table with floor cushions.

JR Kyoto Train Station and Kyoto Tower are both about an 8-minute walk. Gojo Subway Station is 300 metres away.

What would you highlight about Wajimaya Ryokan

The real-deal ryokan experience

If you want to spend a few nights in a real ryokan (not the edulcorated-for-tourist replicas), this might be the real deal. Wooden and paper panels, tatami, futons, internal garden, traditional shower, in-room tea-set, yukatas, and many other details. My kids (14 and 11 y.o) said this was the best hotel in our 3-weeks-trip throughout Japan. The staff is very kind and eager to make your stay great.

All was great. The neighborhood is not so charming and the location is not the most convenient to reach the most famous Kyoto areas (Gion etc), but you can walk there in 20 minutes or so.

Just the essentials of a Ryokan stay

- Aesthetic was lovely - Futons were super comfy- feathery bedding, cosy, clean - Space at the back for backpacks/suitcases - Little tea station for making green tea - Yukata provided for use in the place - Cold water machine for refilling bottles, shampoo, clean showers, toothpaste and little bathroom ameneties all provided - Host fully explained the facilities/amenities/house rules when we arrived, got my friend a plaster when he got bad blisters, and kept our bags before check in (the latter makes a huge difference when you're traipsing round 35 degree Kyoto!)

- No onsen/meals (this was known when booking and we got great value for money, but not a true true ryokan experience!) - This isn't even negative but be warned there's lots of putting on/taking off of slippers. It keeps everything super clean but easy to get mixed up (maybe only to a foolish westerner like me!) - Extra booking charge paid upon arrival- pretty standard for Japan and not lots, just something to be aware of!

What would you highlight about Wajimaya Ryokan

My stay in this ryokan was an amazing cultural experience.

I like the general atmosphere of the Ryokan especially the warmth of the owners who'd always greet you with a warm Japanese greetings and a smile. The owners were really helpful too when I asked for assistance. They went beyond what I've asked for. At the reception, I really appreciate that there's a guide book for places to visit in Kyoto. As a solo traveller, that's something I exactly needed. For the room, it's really spacious and comfy. The beddings were soft enough for me. They also provided kimono that can be used for sleeping. It's really comfortable and breathable! There's also a tea set included in the room which you can enjoy preparing on your own. As for the location, I couldn't ask for any better place. It's super convenient to tourist attractions and Kyoto station. You can just walk to Higashi Hongan-ji Temple which is an amazing structure in the middle of the city. You can also see the Kyoto tower from this temple so you could imagine the scenery of tradition and modernity in harmony. The tower is of course just a walking distance too. There are a lot of food options around the area. If you don't want to walk, you can also rent a bike for a day because the bike rental shop is just a few steps away from this ryokan. Lastly and most importantly, all these great features for a much cheaper price compared to nearby Ryokans. It's truly a great deal especially for solo travellers like me who want to immerse in a full cultural experience at an affordable price.

A cozy & authentic stay at the heart of Kyoto.

There is a little lush garden in the middle of the hotel, very cozy and pretty. It's right next to the washbasins! The rooms have excellent air conditioning!

The rooms with the toilets are very small. They get excessively hot during the day in summer, and people with long legs might have issues closing the doors. Watch out: This Hotel has an 11pm curfew! No problem for early birds, but notorious night owls might struggle. Make sure to bring mosquito repellent when you come, the open, old-timey wooden architecture lends itself to these little invaders.

Excellent location, authentic experience

The location was excellent, quiet street close to a main road that leads straight to Kyoto station on foot, close to a temple and a beautiful garden, the rooms were spacious and comfortable, the landlord was ever present and very helpful, he tried his best, it felt like a very authentic experience, we enjoyed the rules of the house.

There were urinals which had something to keep them from smelling but it in itself stank. The toilets were clean but very cramped.

Wonderful authentic experience at Great Value

Mr Takao Tabata who runs the wonderful hotel is very helpful. This is a very authentic ryokan experience. The shower and tub are great, the room was lovely. Great to get that old style feeling. Great value for money. Easily my favourite hotel in my recent Japan trip.

Cosy place, feels like home.

The ryokan is situated really central, almost across a main shrine. The hosts were very kind and helpful and we felt like home. someone was comparing about the positioning of the toilets and showers, but, come on, it is a ryokan, not a hotel. Except a bit of “old” smell, which I am not sure how can be refreshed, it was absolutely perfect.

This place is simply incredible for its price. You get a private, tradional room with the option to make your own tea, wear a yukata, and AC. There is a cute garden as well as a bath that is the perfect temperature for me. The host is very nice and helpful as well. This ryokan is located close to the JR Kyoto Station which is perfect for those on the JR pass and just passing through like myself.

beautiful property, definitely will recommend if you want to have ‘authentic Japanese experience’ (I have literally no idea if it is actually authentic, I’m a tourist - but feels very authentic). Rooms are stunning and if you’re worried about your back sleeping on those mats - don’t; best sleep I had in days! the owner is lovely and overall very positive experience

I saw a spider - that’s it, there are literally no downsides! beautiful and stunning place, book it and you won’t regret.

This is a nice, well-located, classic no-frills ryokan. It has everything travelers might be looking for in an authentic traditional guesthouse experience in Kyoto. And the proprietor is very kind and caring. I would love to return.

Quaint and Comfortable with a good heart

The house itself was rustic, quiet and pretty. The bathroom area especially was nice with the outdoor area near the sinks. Located in a good location away from the station but already across from a Temple.

Smaller issues with the wifi, sometimes hair from other people was in the bathroom (more of a guest problem, not the Ryokan) but still stopped me from enjoying the indoor bath.

What would you highlight about Wajimaya Ryokan

First experience in Ryokan as a couple

8 minutes walk to JR Kyoto. Rooms appeared clean. Green tea & hot water available. Pretty inner garden. Staff were always at hand. Onsen available. Large spacious room-2 to 3 times larger than similarly priced business hotel. Yukatas provided.

A Ryokan is not a hotel, with it's pros and cons. There is a curfew, meaning you can't enter or leave between 11pm to 7am, that is stated before you book, and to be fair Kyoto is quiet after 9pm so theoretically should be fine. In practice, it felt slightly restrictive to me. Bear in mind the innkeeper come out of his room and greet you every single time you leave and enter-this is sweet and probably for security purposes, but personally I preferred the freedom & anonymity of a business hotel. Another thing is that a lot of the doorways, ceilings were quite low. If you're taller than 5'10'' there are a lot of places to bump your head, in the room there are poles poking down from the ceiling above the plugs (where you'd be bending and standing up a lot). Doorways are narrow, toilet rooms are small. I am 6'2'' and felt slightly cramped, also had to watch my head and was bumping into things a lot. I wanted to point this out as no other reviews did. You sleep on a 2inch thick mat on the floor-I had no problems, my girlfriend realised she couldn't sleep (Ryokan was her idea so earplugs for me). There are 2 sitting modern toilets 2 urinals and 1 onsen shower room. No ensuite. These are shared between 7 rooms, we had no issues with waiting for toilets/showers the 3 nights we were there, but if you do not like public pooping or waking up in the middle of the night, putting your slippers on, moving 2 creaky sets of sliding doors changing to shared toilet slippers and repeating on the way back just to pee then it's something to consider. Both me and my girlfriend also felt like something in the room was causing us to have some sort of allergy, sneezing and having watery eyes. Affected her sleep. I heard a lot of sneezing from the other rooms too. There were also mosquitoes which is unsurprising given there's a cute garden 10 ft from where you sleep.

Excellent. The Ryokkan and owner went beyond our expectations

The Ryokkan is clean, and we had a cozy room. There were enough towels during our stay. The owner speaks English too. It is close to shopping centres and train stations, and yet it is still quiet at night. Now we have a go-to place if we are staying in Central Kyoto!

The washing machine was a bit small and the drier took a bit longer to dry our clothes. But there is a coin laundry nearby so it wasn’t a hassle for us.
